I Almost Skipped Parque Explora
One of the things I love most about traveling is discovering places that completely change my expectations.
Parque Explora Medellín was one of those places.
When my wife suggested we spend the day there, I wasn’t exactly excited. From what I had seen online, it looked like a science museum that was geared mostly toward children. I figured we would spend an hour or two walking through the exhibits before moving on to something else.
Thankfully, I listened to her.
What I expected to be a quick stop turned into one of the most enjoyable and surprisingly entertaining days we had during our stay in Medellín.
If you’re visiting Medellín with family, traveling as a couple, or simply enjoy interactive attractions, Parque Explora deserves a spot on your itinerary.
Arriving at Medellín’s Science District
We were staying in Laureles, one of my favorite neighborhoods in Medellín because it’s walkable, filled with restaurants, and offers easy access to the Metro.
Getting to Parque Explora was simple. After taking the Metro north, we arrived at Parque de los Deseos, one of the city’s most interesting public spaces.
Immediately, the atmosphere felt different from other parts of Medellín.
Modern architecture surrounded us. The Planetarium stood beside the science museum, while people relaxed throughout the open plaza. It was obvious this part of the city was designed for education, culture, and families.
Before even entering Parque Explora, I could tell there was much more here than I originally expected.
More Than a Science Museum
The biggest surprise was how interactive everything was.
This wasn’t a museum where you quietly walk past display cases reading small information plaques.
Instead, nearly every exhibit encouraged visitors to participate.
One room played tricks on your vision.
Another challenged your balance.
Some exhibits explored how the human body works, while others demonstrated technology, sound, communication, and physics in ways that were fun instead of overwhelming.
Adults were laughing just as much as the kids.
That was my first clue that this place wasn’t designed only for children.
The Incredible Aquarium
One of my favorite parts of Parque Explora was the aquarium.
Instead of simply displaying fish, the exhibits recreate ecosystems from Colombia’s rivers and tropical environments.
The enormous freshwater fish immediately grabbed my attention.
Some were much larger than I expected, and watching them glide effortlessly through the water was fascinating.
The exhibits were beautifully designed, making it feel as though you were looking directly into an underwater world rather than a traditional aquarium.
Even after traveling through several countries in South America, I still enjoy seeing wildlife presented in a way that helps visitors understand the environment these animals actually live in.
Dinosaurs With a View
Walking outside, we suddenly found ourselves surrounded by life-sized dinosaurs.
The exhibits were fun by themselves, but what made them even more memorable was the incredible backdrop.
Behind the dinosaurs, Medellín stretched across the mountainsides, giving us one of the better panoramic views of the city.
It was another reminder that Medellín is surrounded by beautiful green mountains no matter where you go.
The combination of science, history, and scenery made this section especially enjoyable.
Learning Through Play
One thing Parque Explora does extremely well is making education entertaining.
Instead of presenting information in a dry or overly technical way, the museum encourages visitors to experiment.
We explored exhibits about communication throughout history, viewed displays showing the evolution of technology, and wandered through areas focused on music, sound, and creativity.
Every room offered something different.
Just when I thought I had seen everything, another exhibit would catch my attention.
The Illusion Rooms Were a Blast
Some of the most memorable moments came inside the optical illusion exhibits.
One room completely distorted perspective, allowing us to create funny photographs that made one person appear gigantic while the other looked tiny.
Another colorful tunnel created the sensation that the floor was moving beneath your feet.
Even though you knew it was an illusion, your brain kept telling you something completely different.
These exhibits reminded me that sometimes the simplest ideas create the biggest smiles.
We probably laughed more inside those rooms than anywhere else in the museum.
Sharing the Experience
One thing I enjoy most about traveling with my wife is seeing destinations through her eyes.
She was excited about visiting Parque Explora from the beginning, and throughout the day I could see why.
She spent time exploring almost every interactive exhibit, posing for photos, and encouraging me to try things I probably would have walked past on my own.
Those little moments are often what make a destination memorable.
Travel isn’t always about checking famous attractions off a list.
Sometimes it’s simply about sharing new experiences together.
Why Parque Explora Surprised Me
If someone had asked me beforehand whether Parque Explora would become one of my favorite attractions in Medellín, I probably would have said no.
I honestly expected something designed primarily for school groups.
Instead, I found a place where adults can easily spend half a day having just as much fun as children.
The exhibits were creative.
The aquarium was impressive.
The dinosaur displays were entertaining.
The illusion rooms were hilarious.
Most importantly, the museum never stopped being interesting.
Every section offered something different.
Tips for Visiting Parque Explora
If you’re planning your own visit, here are a few suggestions.
- Allow at least four to six hours.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes.
- Bring your camera because there are plenty of great photo opportunities.
- Visit the aquarium slowly instead of rushing through it.
- Don’t skip the illusion exhibits—they’re some of the most entertaining parts of the museum.
- Consider combining your visit with the nearby Planetarium, Botanical Garden, or Parque de los Deseos.
The area is easily accessible using Medellín’s excellent Metro system, making it an easy addition to almost any itinerary.
Final Thoughts
One lesson I’ve learned after years of traveling is not to judge a destination before I experience it.
I’ve been surprised more times than I can count.
Parque Explora became another perfect example.
What I assumed would be a quick visit turned into a full day filled with learning, laughter, beautiful exhibits, and a few unforgettable photos.
If you’re visiting Medellín, don’t dismiss Parque Explora because you think it’s only for children.
I almost made that mistake.
Thankfully, I didn’t.
Sometimes the places you expect the least from become the memories you treasure the most.
