San Gil Travel Guide: Colombia’s Adventure Capital

San Gil is often called Colombia’s adventure capital, but after spending several days here, I discovered there’s much more to the town than adrenaline activities.

Located in the department of Santander, San Gil serves as an excellent base for exploring some of Colombia’s most beautiful landscapes, colonial towns, and outdoor attractions. Whether you’re interested in paragliding above Chicamocha Canyon, visiting the historic streets of Barichara, or simply enjoying a slower pace of life in a smaller Colombian city, San Gil offers a little bit of everything.

My wife and I spent three days in San Gil during a trip through Santander, and it quickly became one of the most enjoyable regions we’ve visited in Colombia.

Why Visit San Gil?

While many travelers come for adventure sports, San Gil appeals to a much broader audience.

How We Got to San Gil

Our trip began in Bucaramanga.

Rather than taking a bus, we hired a private driver who took us through the Santander countryside while making several interesting stops along the way.

The drive itself became part of the experience.

The scenery gradually changed from city streets to mountain landscapes, winding roads, and dramatic canyon views.

By the time we arrived in San Gil, we already had a strong appreciation for the beauty of the region.

Where We Stayed

Our Airbnb was conveniently located near the shopping mall area, making it an excellent base for exploring the city.

One thing I liked about the location was how easy it was to reach restaurants, shops, cafés, and transportation options.

After long days exploring the region, it was nice to return somewhere that felt comfortable and convenient.

For first-time visitors, staying near the center of town or the mall district provides easy access to most of what San Gil offers.

Located near the center of town, El Gallineral offers a peaceful escape from the busy streets.

The park is known for its winding pathways, river views, and moss-covered trees that create an almost magical atmosphere.

It’s one of the easiest attractions to visit while staying in San Gil.

Explore the Local Plaza

Like many Colombian towns, San Gil revolves around its central plaza.

Day Trips From San Gil

One of the biggest advantages of staying in San Gil is its proximity to several outstanding destinations.

Barichara

Often considered Colombia’s most beautiful colonial town, Barichara is only about 30 minutes away.

We visited as a day trip and spent our time exploring the cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and relaxed atmosphere.

It’s one of the easiest and most rewarding excursions from San Gil.

Chicamocha Canyon

Chicamocha Canyon is one of Colombia’s most impressive natural attractions.

The canyon offers spectacular viewpoints, hiking opportunities, and adventure activities.

For many visitors, it’s one of the main reasons to visit Santander.

Guane

Located just a short drive from Barichara, Guane is one of Santander’s most peaceful colonial villages. Known for its stone streets, historic church, and quiet atmosphere, the town offers visitors a glimpse into traditional rural Colombia. During our journey through the region, we stopped in Guane to explore the village and enjoy its relaxed pace before continuing our travels. While much smaller than neighboring Barichara, Guane’s charm lies in its simplicity, making it a worthwhile stop for anyone exploring the Santander countryside.

Aratoca

Aratoca is a small Santander town that many travelers pass through on their way to Chicamocha Canyon and San Gil. During our trip, we stopped briefly to stretch our legs and explore the town square before continuing our journey through the mountains. While it doesn’t receive the same attention as nearby Barichara or San Gil, Aratoca offers a glimpse into everyday life in rural Santander with its traditional church, local shops, and relaxed atmosphere. If you’re driving through the region, it’s a worthwhile stop to experience another side of Colombia beyond the major tourist destinations.

Food and Restaurants

One thing that surprised me about San Gil was the variety of dining options available.

Whether you’re looking for traditional Colombian meals, casual cafés, or international cuisine, you’ll find plenty of choices throughout town.

After spending active days exploring the region, there was always somewhere nearby to grab a meal and relax.

Is San Gil Safe?

Like most Colombian cities, San Gil requires basic common sense.

During our visit, however, we found the town comfortable and welcoming.

The atmosphere felt relaxed, and we had no issues while exploring the city and surrounding region.

As always, staying aware of your surroundings and using normal travel precautions is recommended.

How Many Days Should You Spend in San Gil?

I would recommend at least three days.

That gives you enough time to:

• Explore San Gil itself
• Visit Barichara
• Experience Chicamocha Canyon
• Try an adventure activity
• Enjoy the local food scene

Many travelers pass through too quickly and miss what makes the region special.

Final Thoughts

San Gil may be known as Colombia’s adventure capital, but what impressed me most was how versatile it felt.

The town works equally well for adventure travelers, couples, retirees, and anyone looking to explore one of Colombia’s most beautiful regions.

Between the outdoor activities, nearby colonial towns, and spectacular landscapes, San Gil provides an excellent introduction to Santander.

For us, it became much more than a stop on the itinerary.

It became one of the highlights of the trip.
