When people ask me about Retiring in Colombia, they’re often looking for one simple answer:

“What’s the best city?”

The truth is, there isn’t one.

I’ve traveled throughout Colombia, and every city offers something different. Some have spring-like weather year-round. Others offer lower living costs, beautiful mountain scenery, beaches, or a slower pace of life.

The best place to retire depends on your priorities.

Do you want excellent healthcare?

Lower living expenses?

Walkable neighborhoods?

A cooler climate?

Easy access to an international airport?

Those are the questions you should answer before choosing where to live.

1. Medellín

Best For:
Most retirees looking for everything.

Pros

• Excellent healthcare
• Modern Metro
• Endless restaurants
• Great weather
• Large expat community
• International airport nearby

Cons

• Higher rent
• More traffic
• Tourist crowds

2. Rionegro

One of my personal favorites.

I love the cooler temperatures, cleaner air, modern neighborhoods, and easy access to Medellín without living in the middle of the city.

Pros

• Cooler climate
• Near international airport
• Modern development
• Less traffic
• Great walking

Cons

• More expensive than smaller cities
• Nightlife is quieter

3. Bucaramanga

One of Colombia’s most underrated cities.

Beautiful parks.

Excellent weather.

Affordable.

Good healthcare.

Much less touristy.

4. Pereira

Pereira continues to attract retirees looking for the Coffee Region lifestyle.

It offers mountain scenery, good weather, and lower housing costs than Medellín.

5. Manizales

Probably one of Colombia’s most overlooked retirement destinations.

Perfect for retirees who enjoy:

6. Armenia

A relaxed lifestyle surrounded by coffee farms.

Excellent for slower retirement living.

7. Santa Marta

If beaches are your priority…

Santa Marta deserves consideration.

• Lower costs than Cartagena

8. Cartagena

Beautiful.

Historic.

International.

But also one of Colombia’s more expensive cities.

Excellent for retirees who enjoy city life mixed with beach access.

9. Bogotá

The capital offers:

• International airport
• Museums
• Restaurants

However…

Higher altitude, heavier traffic, and cooler temperatures aren’t for everyone.

10. Cúcuta

Since I currently live here, I’ve experienced everyday life firsthand.

Advantages

• Affordable
• Friendly people
• Close to Venezuela
• Lower housing costs

Disadvantages

• Hot climate
• Limited tourism
• Smaller expat community

What Matters Most?

Instead of asking,

“What’s the best city?”

Ask yourself:

One thing I’ve learned from traveling throughout Colombia is that every trip changes my perspective. A city that didn’t impress me on paper sometimes surprised me once I experienced it, while others lived up to their reputation for entirely different reasons.

That’s why I encourage anyone considering retirement here to spend time in several cities before making a decision. Stay for a week or two, explore different neighborhoods, visit grocery stores, ride public transportation, and imagine what everyday life would actually be like—not just what you see on vacation.
