One of the first questions people ask when considering a move to Colombia is simple:

“How much money will I actually need each month?”

The answer depends on your lifestyle, the city you choose, and whether you’re living alone or as a couple.

Over the past several years I’ve lived in Colombia, traveled throughout the country, and tracked my own expenses while exploring different cities.

My Personal Advice

One thing I’ve learned while living in Colombia is that your lifestyle matters more than the city itself.

Two people living in the same neighborhood can spend hundreds of dollars differently every month simply because of how they choose to live.

I always recommend budgeting a little more than you expect to spend during your first few months. Once you become familiar with local prices, shopping habits, and transportation, it’s much easier to fine-tune your monthly budget.

Final Thoughts

One of the biggest advantages of living in Colombia is flexibility.

Whether your budget is $1,500, $2,000, or $3,000 per month, there are cities and neighborhoods that can provide an excellent quality of life.

Use this calculator as a starting point, then adjust it based on your own lifestyle and the city you ultimately choose.
