Pampalona
Traveling through Santander from Cucuta to Bucaramanga offers some of the most surprising landscapes and cultural experiences in Colombia. On a recent 5-day trip from Cúcuta, we explored Bucaramanga, San Gil, the spectacular Chicamocha Canyon, and the colonial town of Barichara. This shorter guide covers the highlights for travelers looking to plan the same route.
Day 1 — From Cúcuta to Bucaramanga
The journey begins early at the Cúcuta bus terminal. The route passes through Los Patios, Pamplona, and climbs up to the high-altitude páramo near Berlín—reaching nearly 11,700 ft (3,560m). Expect dramatic weather changes and incredible Andean views.
Along the way, roadside restaurants offer hearty almuerzos and panoramic views. The full trip from Cucuta to Bucaramanga takes roughly 7 hours before arriving in Bucaramanga, one of Colombia’s cleanest and most organized mid-sized cities.
Exploring Bucaramanga
Bucaramanga is known as “La Ciudad de los Parques”—the city of parks. Among the highlights:
Parque San Pío – great for people-watching
Centro Comercial Megamall – modern mall with activities, including an ice-skating rink

Parque del Agua – festive and beautifully illuminated in December
The city also shines in gastronomy. Locals say Santander beef and chicken are among the best in Colombia, and it’s worth confirming that yourself. One standout spot is Gordo’s Burger, serving some of the best U.S.-style burgers in the region.

Day 2 — Paragliding Over Ruitoque
Parapente Ruitoque is one of Colombia’s most famous paragliding sites. Flights run daily (weather permitting) and give you a sweeping bird’s-eye view of Bucaramanga and the entire metropolitan valley.

Travel Tip:
You can take an Uber to the take-off zone, and most companies provide return transportation after your flight.
Day 3 — Chicamocha National Park
From Bucaramanga to San Gil, stop at Parque Nacional del Chicamocha (Panachi). This is Colombia’s version of the Grand Canyon, with dramatic cliffs, carved valleys, and a unique prehistoric history.
Top experiences include:
The cable car across the canyon
Bungee jumping, ziplining, and adventure attractions
Sculptures, viewpoints, and cultural exhibitions
Afterward, enjoy lunch at one of the panoramic restaurants outside the park before continuing to San Gil.

Day 4 — San Gil & Barichara
San Gil is considered Colombia’s adventure capital, offering rafting, bungee, waterfalls, caving, and more. Even if you skip the extreme sports, the town is lively and welcoming.
Just 30 minutes away sits Barichara, one of Colombia’s most charming colonial towns. Its cobblestone streets, clay-colored rooftops, and scenic viewpoints make it a must-visit. Try a meal at El Puntal, a favorite for views and traditional dishes.

Day 5 — Returning to Cúcuta
Expect some unpredictability. Buses may switch routes or require transfers in Bucaramanga before returning to the Norte de Santander region. The ride back again crosses the high elevation zones, where temperatures drop sharply.
