If you’re thinking about moving to Colombia, you’ve probably seen videos and blog posts saying you can live here for $1,000 a month.

And while that might be possible, that’s not the full picture—especially if you’re supporting more than just yourself.

So instead of giving you estimates, I’m going to show you something more useful:

My real monthly cost of living in Colombia.

This is based on my actual expenses living here full-time, supporting a household of 3—and sometimes 4 people.

💡 My Monthly Budget Overview

On average, I spend about:

👉 $2,000 USD per month

That covers:

  • Housing

  • Utilities

  • Food

  • Transportation

  • Subscriptions

  • Miscellaneous expenses

This is not a “bare minimum” budget.

This is a real lifestyle.

🏠 Housing & Fixed Expenses

Here’s my core monthly cost in Colombian pesos and USD:

  • Rent (Arriendo): 1,900,000 COP (~$507) 3 bdrm/4 bath Estrato 4

📱 Additional Monthly Expenses

Here are some of the extra costs that people often forget to include:

  • Parking: $120

  • Netflix: $18

  • Amazon Prime: $17

  • Insurance: $82

  • ATM Fees: $10

This is a big one—and it varies depending on your lifestyle.

For my household:

👉 Food budget: ~$800/month

That includes:

  • Groceries

  • Eating out

  • Household items

You can spend less if you eat strictly local—but this gives flexibility and comfort.

💰 Miscellaneous & Family Support

On top of that:

👉 $200/month goes toward:

  • Supporting my wife

  • Miscellaneous expenses

  • Unexpected costs

📊 Total Monthly Cost

When you add everything together:

  • Housing & utilities: ~$1,025

  • Additional expenses: ~$390

  • Food: ~$800

  • Miscellaneous: ~$200

👉 Total: ~$2,000/month

🧠 What This Lifestyle Looks Like

This isn’t a survival budget.

This is:

  • A comfortable home

  • Reliable utilities

  • Eating out when you want

  • Supporting a household

  • Living without constant stress about money

And most importantly…

👉 It’s sustainable.

⚠️ What Most People Get Wrong

A lot of content online focuses on the lowest possible cost of living in Colombia.

But here’s the reality:

  • That usually assumes a single person

  • It doesn’t include real lifestyle expenses

  • It ignores family responsibilities

If you’re moving here with a partner—or supporting others—your costs will be higher.

📍 Location Matters

Where you live in Colombia will impact your budget.

Major cities like Medellín or Bogotá can cost more, while cities like Cúcuta tend to be more affordable.

🔑 Key Takeaways

If you’re planning to live in Colombia:

  • You can live comfortably on ~$2,000/month

  • Supporting a family increases costs significantly

  • Your lifestyle choices will determine your actual expenses

Final Thoughts

Colombia can absolutely be an affordable place to live—but only if you understand what your real expenses will look like.

For me, $2,000/month provides a comfortable and stable lifestyle for a household of 3–4 people.

And that’s the kind of information that would have been nice to have before making the move.
