Café Jardín Villa de Leyva: One of My Favorite Breakfast Spots in Town
One of my favorite travel discoveries in Colombia happened completely by accident.
While exploring Villa de Leyva, my wife and I stopped at Café Jardín for a coffee and a piece of cake after returning from a day of sightseeing around Boyacá. At the time, we weren’t looking for breakfast recommendations or planning our next meal.
We simply wanted a place to sit down and relax.
By the time we left, we had already decided to come back the next morning.
That turned out to be one of the best decisions we made during our stay in Villa de Leyva.
Discovering Café Jardín Villa de Leyva
After spending the day exploring attractions around Villa de Leyva and Ráquira, we returned to town ready for a break.
Walking through the historic center, we came across Café Jardín.
The atmosphere immediately caught our attention.
The outdoor seating area offered a great place to relax while watching daily life unfold in one of Colombia’s most charming colonial towns.
Sometimes you can tell within a few minutes whether you’ll enjoy a place.
This felt like one of those places.
Coffee, Cake, and a Great View of Local Life
Our first visit was simple.
Coffee and dessert.
While the cake didn’t quite live up to the expectations set by the display photos, that wasn’t really what made the visit memorable.
What I enjoyed most was sitting outside and watching the town.
Young adults played soccer in the street with the dogs that were wearing Colombian flag-colored scarfs.
Neighbors stopped to chat.
Families walked their dogs.
The entire scene felt relaxed and authentic.
Villa de Leyva has a slower pace than many Colombian destinations, and Café Jardín turned out to be one of the best places to appreciate it.
Why We Came Back the Next Morning
While enjoying our coffee, I noticed something.
The breakfast photos.
The menu featured croissant sandwiches, coffee drinks, and breakfast plates that looked significantly better than the breakfast we had eaten earlier that morning elsewhere in town.
I told my wife that we should return before leaving Villa de Leyva.
Thankfully she agreed.
Breakfast at Café Jardín
The following morning we returned. I had my eye on a croissant breakfast sandwich I saw on the sign the night before. The wife had them cook up traditional colombian huevos w/ tomato & onion and an arepa.
This time the food lived up to the photos.
The breakfast was fresh, well prepared, and exactly what we were hoping for before beginning our trip back to Bogotá.
The service was friendly, the atmosphere remained relaxed, and the café felt every bit as welcoming as it had the day before.
Sometimes restaurants impress you once.
It’s always a better sign when they impress you twice. Oh, and the price? Two meals, juice, coffee for $61000 pesos ($17 usd)
One of My Favorite Moments in Villa de Leyva
Oddly enough, my strongest memory of Café Jardín isn’t actually the food.
It’s the people.
Travel often focuses on attractions, landmarks, and bucket-list experiences.
Yet one of my favorite memories from Villa de Leyva was simply sitting outside this café watching the community interact.
People seemed genuinely happy.
There was no rush.
No chaos.
Just people enjoying an evening in a beautiful town.
For me, that atmosphere became part of what made Villa de Leyva special.
Location and Atmosphere
One thing I appreciated about Café Jardín was its location near the historic center.
After a day of exploring, it was easy to stop in for coffee, breakfast, or a quick break before continuing on.
The café itself has a warm and inviting atmosphere that fits perfectly with Villa de Leyva’s colonial character.
Whether you’re traveling solo, with a partner, or with family, it’s the type of place where you can comfortably spend more time than you originally planned.
Is Café Jardín Worth Visiting?
Absolutely.
There are many places to eat in Villa de Leyva, but Café Jardín stood out because it combined several things I value when traveling:
- Good coffee
- Excellent breakfast
- Friendly service
- Comfortable atmosphere
- Great people watching
- Convenient location
Most importantly, it became a place we wanted to revisit.
That’s usually the highest compliment I can give a restaurant or café.
Final Thoughts
Not every memorable travel experience involves a major attraction.
Sometimes it’s a quiet café, a cup of coffee, and an hour spent watching life unfold around you.
For me, Café Jardín became one of those places.
While Villa de Leyva offers plenty of attractions, restaurants, and activities, this café remains one of the spots I remember most from our visit.
If you’re spending a few days in town and looking for a relaxing place to enjoy breakfast or coffee, Café Jardín deserves a spot on your list.
